Sensory Processing

Understanding your child's sensory world

Compassionate, play-based education

Sensory processing is how our brain receives, interprets, and responds to messages from our senses. It helps children understand the world, interact with others, and learn to coordinate their movements. When a child has difficulty processing these inputs, they might feel overwhelmed (sensory seeking or avoiding) or struggle with everyday tasks.

The "Big Three" Sensory Systems

These primitive systems lay the foundation for all early learning, regulation, and motor skills.

Tactile System (Touch)

Helps children interpret information from receptors on their skin. This includes light touch, deep pressure, temperature, pain, and textures. A well-integrated tactile system supports emotional regulation, early bonding, and fine motor skills.

Proprioception (Body Position)

Our "body awareness" sense. Receptors in joints and muscles tell the brain where our limbs are and how much force to use. Doing "heavy work" (pushing, pulling, lifting) provides proprioceptive input that calms and regulates a busy nervous system.

Vestibular System (Movement)

Our sense of movement and balance. Fluid in our inner ears tells us where our head is in space, if we're moving fast or slow, and in which direction. This system serves as the "battery pack" of the brain, affecting muscle tone, coordination, and attention.
