The early months of your baby’s life are a beautiful, intense, and often overwhelming transition. In pediatric OT, we look at the newborn phase from a sensory and regulatory lens—helping parents understand their infant’s "wake windows," providing strategies to soothe their central nervous system, starting early milestones (like tummy time or infant massage), and supporting the critical well-being of the postpartum parent.
Foundations of Early Development
How early sleep rhythms, milestone play, and maternal well-being support your family.
Wake Windows & Sleep
A baby’s "wake window" is the active time between sleep cycles. In the early weeks (0-3 months) this window is tiny but vital. Understanding how to gently stimulate your baby during their awake times (and recognizing overstimulation cues) ensures a calm transition back to rest and prevents overtiredness.
Early Milestones & Massage
Gentle bodywork routines that support development right from the start. Infant massage provides critical proprioceptive (muscle/joint) and tactile (touch) input that promotes parent-child bonding and digestion comfort. Early tummy time and crossing midline exercises build core extensor and bilateral coordination.
Postpartum Mental Well-Being
A baby cannot regulate themselves without a co-regulating parent. The postpartum transition involves massive physiological, emotional, and neurobiological adjustments. Providing self-care strategies, setting realistic boundaries, and acknowledging postpartum mental health changes is key to a thriving family.
