Motor Development

Nurturing coordination, strength, and motor planning

Compassionate, play-based education

Motor development is the foundation of your child’s physical independence and confidence. It spans from major milestones (like rolling, sitting, and crawling) to microscopic coordination (like holding a pencil, buttoning a shirt, or planning a complex obstacle course). In pediatric OT, we look at the whole child to build strength and coordination from the core outward.

Key Pillars of Physical Growth

Understanding how strength, hand coordination, and brain-body planning work together.

Gross Motor Skills

Uses the body's large muscle groups for movements like rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, and balance. Strong gross motor development starts with a stable "core" and strong neck/shoulder muscles, which directly support a child's ability to sit still and focus in a classroom.

Fine Motor & Hand Skills

The coordination of small muscles in the fingers, hands, and wrists. Essential for functional tasks like grasping toys, feeding themselves, buttoning, using scissors, and writing. Building fine motor strength involves hand-eye coordination and pincer grasp precision.

Motor Planning (Praxis)

The brain's ability to conceive, organize, and execute an unfamiliar physical action. A child with strong motor planning can look at a playground obstacle course, figure out how to climb it, and adjust their body movements gracefully. It requires body awareness and sensory feedback.
